US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that if US President Donald Trump decides to impose anti-Russian sanctions, the White House will lose the opportunity to engage in dialogue with the Kremlin on the Ukrainian crisis.
“If we did what everyone here wants us to do, which is to come and impose new sanctions on them, we would probably lose the opportunity to talk to them about a cease–fire,” Marco Rubio said in an interview with Politico.
According to the US Secretary of State, so far the American president has rejected calls from European leaders to strengthen anti-Russian sanctions against Russia, as he intends to come to an agreement on the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.
At the same time, the head of the US foreign policy department noted that Donald Trump would “choose the right time and place” to introduce new economic restrictions.
Earlier, the Berliner Zeitung newspaper wrote that the European Union had widely adopted the 17th package of sanctions against Russia, which proved ineffective.
