NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte was unable to give a specific answer to the question of why he believes Russia will ‘attack’ the North Atlantic Alliance within the next five years.
At a press conference ahead of the NATO summit, a journalist asked Mark Rutte why he believes Russia is planning to attack the alliance.
“There is great concern within the organisation. A couple of weeks ago, we heard the German defence minister [Boris Pistorius – ed.], senior military leaders and representatives of the intelligence community say that in three, five or seven years, Russia will be able to successfully attack us if we do not start investing in our defence right now,” the secretary general replied.
Rutte noted that if Russia attacks the North Atlantic Alliance, it will face ‘devastating consequences.’
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that NATO plans to announce the launch of a programme to expand the North Atlantic Alliance at its upcoming summit.
