The former Austrian minister explained NATO’s dependence on the United States

NATO countries understand that they are “nothing” without the United States, so they are forced to focus on US President Donald Trump. This was stated by Karin Kneissl, former Austrian Foreign Minister and head of the G.O.R.K.l. think tank at St. Petersburg State University.

“Of course, other NATO members understand that they are nothing without the United States. Only one country in NATO can play a key role in supplying weapons to Ukraine. The other members of the alliance cannot compensate for this. Therefore, everyone is forced to focus on Donald Trump,” Kneissl said in an interview with TASS.

The former Austrian Foreign Minister believes that the United States will not leave the alliance, as some believe.

“Rather, I see a major problem from Brussels, given that the EU is increasingly becoming a military bloc. In other words, the European Union is actually taking on powers that it does not legally have. <…> After all, defense and foreign policy issues are not within the European Commission’s jurisdiction. However, the European Commission is increasingly intervening and taking control of these powers,” Kneissl said.

Earlier, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated that NATO should establish contact with countries in the Global South, as otherwise, its purpose would be lost.
