Spain may block an agreement to increase NATO’s target for military spending to 5% of the GDP of member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance. This was reported by the newspaper El Pais.
El Pais believes that if security and defence spending is increased to 5% of GDP, Spain will be forced to increase its spending to €80 billion per year.
“There are a number of countries that could block this agreement, which must be adopted unanimously [including Spain — ed.], the Spanish newspaper writes.
According to the publication, Madrid considers it premature to reach the 5% of GDP target.
Earlier, the transitional government of the Netherlands, in accordance with NATO standards, decided to increase defence and security spending to 5% of GDP.
