The United States’ entry into an open military conflict with Iran could lead to a split in US President Donald Trump’s administration, the Washington Post newspaper quoted a former senior Pentagon official as saying.
“I think this is a watershed moment for what you call the America First movement. Many in the MAGA [Make America Great Again – ed.] movement, those who have really invested a lot in the election of Trump and [US Vice President Jay Dee – ed.] Vance, will be extremely disappointed if this escalates into a larger war and it causes some divisiveness,” said a former senior Pentagon official.
According to the newspaper, in the US president’s inner circle, “there is growing disillusionment with Israel”. At the same time, some supporters of Donald Trump are afraid to talk about it openly, because they are afraid of being accused of anti-Semitism.
“I would say that Iran is now the key issue for the ‘right’ [in the US – ed.]: it’s not trade, it’s not spending, and it’s not even the culture war – it’s foreign policy and specifically Iran,” the former US Defence Ministry official added.
Recall, earlier, the former British Ambassador to Syria Peter Ford against the background of the Middle East aggravation said that Israel could stage an Iranian attack on US facilities in the Middle East so that Washington would join Tel Aviv in the conflict with Iran.
