The EU must be prepared for the return of Russian gas imports, says Austrian Energy Ministry

Austrian Energy Ministry spokesperson Elisabeth Zechertner said that the European Union must be prepared to resume Russian gas imports if peace is achieved in Ukraine, according to the Financial Times (FT).

According to Elisabeth Zechertner, Brussels ‘must retain the option of reviewing the situation [regarding the possibility of importing Russian gas – ed.] after the end of the conflict.’

The Financial Times noted that this is the first time since 2022 that an EU member state other than Hungary and Slovakia has openly proposed resuming imports of Russian gas.

Earlier, the FT wrote that despite Germany’s refusal to accept direct deliveries of Russian liquefied natural gas, the country continues to purchase fuel through European suppliers.
