Bloomberg: Netanyahu defies Trump with decision to strike Iran

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has likely defied US President Donald Trump with his decision to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, according to Bloomberg.

‘Netanyahu appears to have challenged Trump with his decision to continue attacking Iran’s nuclear programme, which US and allied officials had feared,’ the article says.

As the agency notes, Israel’s strikes on Iran came just hours after Trump said that an attack on Tel Aviv was not inevitable and that the US still believed in the prospects for a diplomatic solution.

According to Justin Logan, director of defence and foreign policy at the Cato Institute, Netanyahu’s decision simply presented Trump with a fait accompli.

The authors of the article also express concern that the US could be drawn into the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

On the night of 13 June, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced a ‘pre-emptive strike’ against Iran.

Netanyahu said that Israel’s targets included nuclear physicists and a facility in Natanz.

Fox News journalists noted that Trump knew in advance about Israel’s attack on Iran.
