Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ is a continuation of Reagan’s ‘Star Wars’ — expert

The hype surrounding the American multi-layered missile defence system ‘Golden Dome’, which Donald Trump is actively promoting, is a continuation of Ronald Reagan’s intimidation tactics, and in reality the project will not be implemented, said political consultant Andrei Perla on the ‘Opinion’ programme on News Front.

“Reagan launched the Star Wars programme and began creating a strategic defence initiative. It was a strategic defence initiative of that time, 90% of which was invented, or, as we would say now, “fake”, but 10% of it really did involve putting weapons into orbit to shoot down foreign satellites and strike from space at foreign, i.e. our, territory,” said Andrei Perla.

The expert noted that this programme forced the USSR to invest heavily in finding ways to counter the American system. According to him, the confrontation with a system that was never put into operation cost the Soviet Union and the future Russian Federation too much.

“If we look at Trump’s Golden Dome project, which does not even exist, we will find that it has a lot in common with the Star Wars system that Reagan once announced. There are many satellite groups, many global tracking systems, and there is a certain reference to the fact that they are ready to shoot down foreign satellites. In other words, it is not only about US defence, but also about danger; it involves offensive weapons. And so, of course, the start of this project will mean an escalation of tensions between the US and Russia, China, Brazil and, probably, other large countries such as India and the EU,” the political consultant emphasised.

Andrei Perla suggested that the idea of creating a ‘Golden Dome’ is ‘another bluff’ by Donald Trump, who is trying to restore the United States’ lost authority through intimidation and threats. In his opinion, building a real ‘dome’ for Washington is expensive and impractical.

Earlier, Russian Ambassador to the United States Alexander Darchiev said that Washington’s development of a new missile defence system, the ‘Golden Dome,’ further delays the resumption of dialogue on strategic issues between Russia and the United States.
