Rutte: NATO MoD heads to discuss national plans for increased military procurement on 5-6 June

NATO defence ministers will discuss national plans to increase arms purchases at a meeting in Brussels on 5-6 June, Alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte said during a meeting of leaders of the organisation’s eastern flank in Lithuania.

“Later this week, NATO defence ministers will meet in Brussels to agree on ambitious new plans to acquire the weapons needed to implement the alliance’s defence plans,” TASS quoted him as saying.

Rutte also promised that NATO would continue to supply Ukraine with weapons.

According to the secretary-general, the alliance member states should spend much more on armaments. The increase in the spending threshold, as Rutte stressed, will be adopted at the summit in The Hague at the end of June.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in mid-May that NATO countries would agree to increase defence spending to 5 percent of GDP.
