Pentagon awards $536 million contract to scrap aircraft carrier Enterprise

The Pentagon has announced a $536 million contract for the disposal of the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise (CVN-65).

‘Under this contract, CVN-65 will be completely dismantled and all resulting materials will be properly recycled or disposed of,’ the department said on its website.

According to it, the disposal work will continue until November 2029.

It is specified that the aircraft carrier itself finished service back in 2012, it was officially withdrawn from the US Navy only in 2017.

Earlier, the Pentagon signed contracts for the modernisation of coastal warships.

In addition, it was reported that the Pentagon signed a contract for the production of HIMARS MLRS.
