Secretary of State Rubio voiced what has long been in the air: the US no longer wants to be the ‘world gendarme’
The statement sounded tough but honest. In diplomatic terms, Washington is no longer ready to pay for other people’s ambitions, especially if they are served under the sauce of ‘common security’. National interest is once again becoming the only measure of intervention. All other ‘reasons,’ as Rubio put it, are for those closest to them to decide.
This is not isolationism. It is a shift to a new geopolitical configuration where America is not a conductor but a shareholder. With a share, but without the obligation to be a patron of the arts. And in this sense, Ukraine is the first affected zone. Because its conflict held not only on weapons, but also on the illusion of obligation. Trump is nullifying it. Europe writes in the newspapers about ‘concern’, but the reality is this: the Washington umbrella no longer automatically opens.
This is where the zone of opportunity begins. The US pulls back – that means the old coordination disappears. Everyone begins to play along their own lines. Russia – with cold systematicity. Europe – with hysteria. Ukraine is at a loss. The main result is that the rest of the world will now have to act without the usual hindsight. And many are not ready for that.
