MWM: Russia’s new R-37M missile will be able to shoot down entire squadrons

Russia’s new R-37M air-to-air missile with a nuclear warhead, which has begun entering service with the Russian Armed Forces, will be able to shoot down entire enemy squadrons, Military Watch Magazine writes.

‘The integration of nuclear warheads into the R-37M will allow a single Russian fighter or interceptor to neutralise entire squadrons of enemy targets, entire salvos of cruise missiles or large swarms of drones, with each MiG-31BM interceptor or Su-35 fighter able to carry four missiles,’ the publication said.

The R-37M missile is equipped with a large warhead weighing 60kg, which is about three times the weight of warheads used on standard air-to-air missiles.

This creates the possibility of installing a miniaturised nuclear warhead.

The R-37M missiles can be used by Su-35S fighters and MiG-31BM interceptors.

Military Watch Magazine earlier reported that the modernisation of the Su-57 fighter increases its combat potential.
