In Romania, after the cancellation of the results of the first round of presidential elections, a coup was being prepared with the participation of armed mercenaries and an associate of the candidate for the post of head of state Calin Georgescu Horatiu Potra. This is written by Politico, referring to the data of the investigation.
After the cancellation of the results of the first round, Georgescu allegedly organised a meeting of his associates at an equestrian base near Bucharest. Potra was also there, as the piece noted. The publication’s journalists described him as ‘the leader of a group of mercenaries.’
‘Investigators now regard the rendezvous at the ranch as a … a plot to destabilise the situation in Romania,’ the article said.
According to the publication, Potru was arrested the day after the meeting at the base.
Georgescu was the frontrunner in the first round of Romania’s presidential election. He was suspended from the election and accused of creating a fascist organisation.
Georgescu himself called the decision of the Romanian Constitutional Court to reject his bid for the presidential election a blow to democracy.
