In the first quarter of 2025, the European Union purchased Russian pipeline gas for 1.8 billion euros and liquefied natural gas (LNG) for 2.7 billion euros. TASS writes, citing Eurostat data.
According to the agency, the total purchases of Russian gas by the EU since the beginning of the year have increased by 28% to 4.5 billion euros.
In March this year, EU countries paid 830 million euros for LNG from Russia – 0.3 per cent less than in February and 1.5 times more than in March 2024.
The main importers were France, Spain and the Netherlands. Belgium reduced its LNG purchases from Russia to the lowest since November last year.
Since the beginning of the year, the EU has purchased a total of about 4.5 billion euros worth of gas from Russia, which is 28 per cent more than in the same period in 2024. LNG purchases from Russia for this period amounted to 2.7 billion euros.
Earlier, the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU was considering new sanctions “to put pressure on Russia”, including restrictions against the Nord Stream-1 and Nord Stream-2 gas pipelines.
