Trump gave NATO countries an ultimatum – Spiegel

United States President Donald Trump may skip the NATO summit in June if the countries belonging to the North Atlantic Alliance do not increase defence spending to 5% of GDP, Spiegel writes.

According to Spiegel, the new US ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, spoke at every meeting with his NATO colleagues about the need to heed the US administration’s demands and devote 5% of its GDP to defence.

‘At first the Germans believed that the Americans did not mean this five per cent seriously, that it was only a negotiating tactic. But now they take Whitaker at his word’, – stated in the publication.

Recall, earlier Donald Trump asked Congress to increase the defence budget of the country in 2026 by 13%.
