Political analyst Blokhin: Trump has proved in 100 days that he seeks normalisation with Russia
Donald Trump’s first 100 days as US president have shown that restoring relations with Russia is among his top priorities, Konstantin Blokhin, a leading researcher at the Centre for Security Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and an American political scientist, told RIA Novosti.
‘Of course, he wants to normalise relations with Russia. Because, look, the rounds of negotiations are the most real diplomatic marathons of 12 hours. If they didn’t want to negotiate, they would have exchanged ultimatums with each other. An hour at most would have been enough. But the negotiations are going on,’ the expert believes.
According to Blokhin, restoring relations with Moscow is one of the main areas of Trump’s activity in the White House. Firstly, it should contribute to the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict, which has cost Washington significant financial expenses, and will also allow the US to focus on the economic confrontation with China.
According to the political scientist, in addition to restoring relations with Russia, Trump seeks to change the trade balance with other countries and adjust the work of the bureaucratic apparatus in the United States, which requires large investments from the federal budget.
‘In reality, we can distinguish three such directions of his: the first direction – of course, he wants to normalise relations with Russia… The second is to change the trade balance with his allies and adversaries, because the biggest trade deficit in the world is the US trade deficit… And the third direction is an attempt to clear these ‘Avgiev stables’. The fight against this bureaucracy, nomenclature, withdrawal from agreements and organisations that are unnecessary, as it seems to the US,’ the expert said.
