The Latvian Defence Ministry has prepared a draft law that would allow the temporary use of private territories for the placement of defensive structures on the border with Russia, the commander of the National Armed Forces of the Republic, Major General Kaspars Pudāns, told LSM.
“This is what we are doing with the Baltic Defence Line, so that we can block, stop the enemy, essentially prepare them for destruction where we want them to be, by placing obstacles, preparing them, perhaps limiting logging,” Kaspars Pudans said.
According to Pudāns, the Defence Ministry’s bill would allow private territories to be used for “defence needs”, giving them the status of “objects of national interest”.
Recall, earlier in Delfi wrote that Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics signed a law that will allow the country to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention, which prohibits the use, stockpiling and production of anti-personnel mines.
