US duties could cause a humanitarian crisis – China’s commerce minister

The duties imposed by the United States may provoke a humanitarian crisis. This was written in RIA Novosti with reference to the statement of Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao in a conversation with the Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

“US ‘reciprocal’ duties will cause huge damage to developing countries, especially the least developed countries, and may even provoke a humanitarian crisis,” Wang Wentao said.

During the conversation, the two sides discussed such issues as a possible response to the US “reciprocal” duties, defence of the multilateral trading system and ensuring the full operation of the WTO.

Recall, earlier on China Central Television said that from 12 April China will increase additional duties on imported goods from the United States to 125%.
