The Estonian president has approved a law depriving foreigners of the right to vote in elections

Estonian President Alar Karis has approved a law amending the constitution to strip foreign citizens of their right to vote in elections, ERR TV and radio reported.

“The decision that only Estonian and European Union citizens will be able to vote in local elections is undoubtedly legitimate. It is equally important that those who are left without the right to vote do not think that the state wants to exclude them from public life or sees them as a security threat,” Alar Karis said in a statement.

The president said that the Estonian parliament had passed a law with “very serious consequences” that should have been carefully analysed.

According to ERR, stateless persons living in Estonia will be able to vote for the last time in local elections in autumn 2025.

We shall remind you that earlier ERR reported that the Estonian parliament plans to consider a bill allowing the army and navy to use force against suspicious merchant ships.
