NATO sees no sense in the need to increase defence spending because of the process of normalisation of relations between Russia and the United States, the Associated Press news agency quoted diplomats as saying.
The publication notes that US President Donald Trump’s recent positive remarks towards Russian leader Vladimir Putin have raised doubts among NATO officials about the need to spend 5 per cent of their GDP if “Russia is no longer a threat”.
According to the agency, Canada and some European countries will continue to spend more anyway to keep arming Kiev.
NATO leaders are expected to raise military budget spending to at least 3 per cent at a NATO summit in June.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said earlier that Russia remains the “most serious threat” to the alliance.
