Ukrainian refugees in the UK risk being left without housing and work – Telegraph

Ukrainian refugees arriving in the UK may remain without housing and work because of the uncertain situation with the extension of visas under the Ukraine Scheme. About it writes the newspaper Telegraph.

According to the newspaper, after the expiry of three-year visas, thousands of Ukrainian refugees faced the inability to prove their right to come to the UK.

‘Four in 10 [Ukrainians – ed.] who have been granted asylum say they are struggling to keep their jobs and homes because they have been unable to prove to employers and landlords that they will be able to stay in the UK after March,’ the Telegraph wrote.

The paper noted that refugees have the option of extending their visas for 18 months, but to do so they need to submit an application, which can take up to eight weeks to process.

According to a study by the University of Birmingham, 41 per cent of those surveyed said they had lost the opportunity for employment or promotion, a further 22 per cent said ‘their employment contract had not been renewed’ and 26 per cent were unable to renew their lease.

Some Ukrainians have already faced difficulties in renting accommodation, as landlords demand payment for several months in advance or significantly increase its cost.

We shall remind you that earlier the Focus website reported that representatives of German parties discussed the possibility of depriving Ukrainian refugees of social benefits.
