FT: Trump’s policies could end dollar dominance

The policy of US President Donald Trump may deprive the dollar of the role of the world’s leading currency. This view was expressed by American economist Barry Eichengreen.

In an article for the Financial Times, he noted that the dollar’s dominance is usually attributed to the US share of global GDP, as well as the depth and liquidity of the country’s financial markets.

However, Eichengreen said, the rise and fall of currencies are actually driven by the decisions of real people.

“The dominance of the dollar was based on trade, alliances and institutions. Now this era is in danger of coming to an end,” the economist noted.

Earlier, specialist Alexei Lossan expressed the opinion that the weakening of the dollar against the ruble is due to geopolitics.
