The European Union did not impose sanctions against Russian gas in February this year, as Brussels expects to preliminarily establish supplies of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) with Washington. This was written in Politico.
According to Politico, the EU’s attempts to strike a gas deal with the US are holding back the bloc’s sanctions policy against Russia.
‘When the EU adopted a new package of sanctions against Russia in February, officials did not include a ban on LNG, despite mounting pressure from member states. The reason for this was ongoing negotiations with [US President Donald Trump – ed.] The EU did not want to propose a formal ban on Russian fuel until a deal was struck with Washington,’ the publication said.
According to the publication, Trump’s decision on both a possible gas deal with the EU and future anti-Russian sanctions will have an impact on the bloc’s energy policy.
Recall, earlier the European Commission repeatedly postponed indefinitely the publication of the plan for a complete rejection of Russian gas, which was scheduled for 26 March this year.
