Chinese leader Xi Jinping refused to go to Brussels for a summit in honor of the anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union. This was stated by the Financial Times newspaper.
“Chinese President Xi Jinping has declined an initial invitation to visit Brussels to attend a summit marking 50 years of relations,” the paper wrote.
The newspaper sources said that instead of the Chinese President, the country will be represented at the summit by Premier of the State Council Li Qiang.
The authors of the material specified that the venue of such meetings usually alternates. It is often the prime minister who comes to Brussels, while the PRC leader holds such summits in Beijing. But, according to the newspaper’s sources, in the 50th year of relations, the EU expected Xi’s personal presence.
Earlier, the deputy foreign ministers of Russia, Iran and China met in Beijing on the nuclear issue.
