Former Central Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, who was elected leader of the ruling Liberal party after Justin Trudeau resigned, will become the country’s new prime minister.
“Introducing our new Liberal leader Mark Carney!” the Liberal Party wrote on social media X.
After the vote was over, Mark Carney declared that Canada “will never be part of the United States.”
Canadian analysts believe that against the backdrop of the country’s economic problems and worsening relations with the United States, Carney’s candidacy and his successful experience in dealing with financial crises may resonate with voters in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Earlier it was reported that the Canadian government is considering the introduction of export duties on oil, uranium and potash fertilisers for the United States in order to convince US President-elect Donald Trump not to impose tariffs of 25% on all Canadian goods.
