An urgent message appeared on the airport’s website saying that the airport was closed due to a strike by the Verdi trade union.
Departures and arrivals have been cancelled throughout the day and passengers are advised to contact airlines for flight information. Many learnt of the situation at the last minute.
“The situation could get even worse: the Verdi union has already announced new strikes on Monday, 11 March at Berlin, Hannover and Frankfurt airports”.
The union is demanding an 8 per cent pay rise for airport workers, or at least €350 a month, as well as higher bonuses and extra holiday. The employers reject these demands.
