Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni suggested at a meeting of EU leaders that the fifth article of NATO’s collective defence clause be extended to Ukraine without giving it a place in the alliance. This was reported by the Bloomberg news agency.
“This is not the same as joining NATO, but it implies extending the influence of NATO countries to Ukraine,” Giorgia Meloni said.
The prime minister said that EU leaders should think about more long-term solutions to the conflict in Ukraine than sending European peacekeeping troops.
She also stressed that the extension to Ukraine of the fifth article of NATO, which obliges the members of the alliance to defend each other in case of attack, would be an effective solution to settle the conflict.
Earlier, Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Pawel Wroński said at a briefing that the USA had stopped supplying military aid to Ukraine without discussing this decision with its NATO allies.
