China imported a record amount of Russian coal

In 2025, the volume of Russian coal supplies to China rose to 76 million tonnes, which exceeded the indicators of the last four years. This was reported by the Institute of Energy and Finance (IEF).

Coal shipments from Russia totalled 8.8 million tonnes in March, almost triple last year’s figure for the month and above the previous record of 8.5 million tonnes set in August, the IEF said.

China’s coal imports “include record purchases from Russia and Mongolia and a significant increase in shipments from Australia,” according to the Institute of Energy and Finance.

The IEF said that the sharp increase in coal purchases by China is associated with the expectation of higher prices in the world market.

We will remind, earlier the representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Lin Jian said that it was ready to respond to the duties imposed by the United States.
