At a press conference at the National Palace, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she was ready to impose tariffs and retaliatory 25 per cent duties on goods from the United States.
‘Today I want to make it clear that we will always seek a negotiated solution, as we have proposed, within the framework of respect for our sovereignty, but the unilateral decision [imposing duties on goods from Mexico – ed.] taken by the United States affects national and foreign companies operating in our country and affects our people. Therefore, we have decided to respond with tariff and non-tariff measures, which I will publicly announce next Sunday,’ said Claudia Sheinbaum.
The President of Mexico noted that from the duties ‘no one will benefit’, on the contrary, they will only ‘affect the peoples’.
Recall, earlier US President Donald Trump imposed duties on goods from Canada, China and Mexico to ‘protect the country from migrants and drugs’.
