Mexico believes the U.S. has threatened it with military action – WSJ

Mexico’s top military leadership believes that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth threatened the Latin American country with military action during a telephone conversation. This is reported by the Wall Street Journal newspaper.

“According to sources briefed on the 31 January [2025 – ed] conversation, Hegseth told officials that if Mexico did not deal with the collusion between its government and the drug cartels, the U.S. Army was prepared to take unilateral action. According to sources, Mexico’s top [military – ed.] leadership present at the conversation was shocked and outraged, believing that [the minister – ed.] was hinting at military action inside Mexico,” the newspaper said.

Earlier, Pete Hegseth had already said that he did not rule out the possibility of strikes on laboratories in Mexico, where drugs are produced.

Recall, earlier at a speech in Las Vegas, US President Donald Trump said that the Mexican authorities “came to love” his idea to rename the Gulf of Mexico in the Gulf of America.
