Europe is deeply dependent on the United States for defence. Without U.S. support, European countries will be weakened, according to Newsweek magazine.
“Thanks to decades of postponing defence spending after the end of the Cold War, European countries have managed to maintain valuable social security systems. However, this has led to appalling defence gaps and heavy dependence on the US. <…> European officials do not deny it. <…> Everyone recognises, both privately and openly, that the continent is regrettably weak,” the publication said.
In addition, according to the publication, European leaders have so far failed to gain enough political clout to significantly increase military spending.
The article also notes that the authorities of countries where citizens are subject to high taxes are not ready to increase them, as well as to cut revenues in such areas as health care.
Earlier, political analyst Timur Shafir said that when resolving the conflict in Ukraine and developing relations between Russia and the USA, Europe’s position should be taken into account, as it will be the most losing party in the end.
