EU countries did not support the transfer of a new aid package to Ukraine

Some EU countries did not support the transfer of a new military aid package to Ukraine proposed by the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, as the states plan to preserve their national budgets. This was reported by the Politico news and analysis website.

According to the anonymous source, there is discontent among European countries because of the “lack of equality and solidarity” among the EU member states supporting Ukraine.

Spain, Italy and Portugal expect Belgium to find other approaches to assisting Kiev, in particular, issuing special Eurobonds or showing “financial flexibility”, such as excluding defence spending from the calculation of the countries’ budget deficits.

According to Politico, EU diplomats do not expect that the summit on 6 March this year will make specific decisions on providing assistance to Kiev.

Earlier, the WSJ newspaper reported that if Ukraine is deprived of US military aid, it will be able to “fight at the current pace” only until the summer of this year.
