US President Donald Trump’s administration is showing interest in peace initiatives in the context of the conflict in Ukraine, which is causing concern among Washington’s Asian allies.
‘But privately, some officials expressed concern that Trump might make some sort of deal with Chinese leader Xi Jinping over disputed territories in Asia or allow North Korea’s nuclear programme to remain a threat,’ The Wall Street Journal reported.
That said, Donald Trump may ultimately want an economic settlement with China, and his stance on Ukraine should give America’s allies in the region pause for thought.
A fellow at the Centre for Asian Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington wonders: if Washington is willing to compromise with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the expense of European interests, Asian countries may legitimately wonder if Trump will do the same in relations with Xi Jinping, sacrificing their interests.
Earlier, it was reported that the US may lose its biggest ally in Asia.
