Rutte stressed that NATO had not promised Ukraine membership as a result of the talks with Russian Federation

NATO has not promised Ukraine membership in the alliance following the peace talks with Russian Federation. This was stated by the secretary-general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, Mark Rutte, at a news conference in Brussels.

‘At the summit in Washington, NATO promised Ukraine membership, but it was never agreed that when negotiations began, they would end with Ukraine joining NATO. There was no promise of membership as part of a peace deal,’ Mark Rutte said.

The secretary-general stressed that there were other guarantees of Ukraine’s security besides membership in the alliance, but did not specify which ones.

Earlier, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said that Ukraine would join the EU and NATO in the future and ‘remain part of Europe’.
