German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in an interview with RND that the presence of NATO countries in Greenland should be increased amid increased interest from Russia and China in new shipping lanes in the Arctic region.
According to the chancellor, new shipping lanes are opening up in the Arctic region due to climate change, in which Russia and China are interested.
‘So there are legitimate security issues that we need to discuss with each other within NATO. In my opinion, we should increase NATO’s presence in Greenland,’ he emphasised.
At the same time, Scholz noted that as chancellor of the largest EU country, he should ‘keep his back straight and speak clearly when challenged by a small state like Denmark.’
Earlier it was reported that NATO intends to offer United States President Donald Trump to expand the alliance’s military presence in the Arctic in exchange for refusing to annex Greenland.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States should control Greenland because it fears a possible attempt by China to seize the territory in a bid to become an Arctic power.
