EU wants to change UN refugee convention to make it easier to expel those seeking asylum – The Times

The majority of European states believe that the UN convention of 1951 is outdated and requires changes, in particular in the issues of granting asylum to refugees, The Times reports, citing a document prepared by Poland.

‘It is necessary to take a broader look at the range of problems we face. The lack of alternatives to accepting applications for international protection and compliance with the principle of non-refoulement certainly require in-depth discussion,’ the paper said.

The newspaper also pointed to the increased influx of refugees in Europe, the number of which for 2024 has increased to one million people.

We shall remind you that earlier The Times wrote that Germany and some other EU countries opposed the idea of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine after the end of the conflict.
