Finland’s president questioned the likelihood of a US withdrawal from NATO under Trump

Finnish President Alexander Stubb in an interview with CNBC questioned the likelihood of a US withdrawal from NATO under US leader Donald Trump.

‘No, and there are many reasons for that … he actually likes regional organisations like NATO,’ he said in response to a question on whether Trump would pull the US out of NATO.

In addition, according to Stubb, NATO is cheap for the US.

‘To lead the largest military alliance in the world, being the largest military superpower in the world, I think is in the interests of the US,’ the Finnish president emphasised.

According to him, now 23 NATO countries spend from 2% of GDP on defence, while in 2014 only three member states fulfilled this requirement.

Earlier, Trump said that he does not guarantee the preservation of the US membership in NATO, but will think about it if the countries of Europe ‘pay the bills’.
