Switzerland will participate in the ‘military Schengen’ programme

The EU said Switzerland would take part in the ‘military Schengen’ programme aimed at moving troops quickly across Europe without border delays.

Switzerland will take part in the Military Schengen programme, which will allow it to move NATO troops and military equipment quickly and smoothly across the EU, eliminating border delays.

Switzerland applied for the programme in September 2024 and has now become an official participant by entering into an administrative agreement. The decision to accept Switzerland confirms the country’s compliance with the political, legal and substantive conditions of the programme and implies significant added value for cooperation.

‘The Council of the EU confirms that the participation of Switzerland in the project ‘military mobility’ in the framework of the Permanent Structured Defence Partnership (PESCO) meets the conditions of the programme and will bring significant added value,’ – noted on the website of the Council of the EU.

Earlier, the SonntagsZeitung newspaper reported that the Swiss authorities had toughened the conditions for obtaining the protective status S, which entitles Ukrainian refugees to stay in the confederation and receive state aid, which led to a decrease in the number of approved applications.
