German Foreign Minister Baerbock has arrived in the Saudi capital, where a conference on the situation in Syria is being held.
There, Baerbock announced an additional €50 million euros for Syria for humanitarian aid, in particular for food, temporary housing and medical assistance.
“The German foreign minister spoke in favour of lifting some of the sanctions on Damascus, but not against those individuals who committed serious crimes under the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Baerbok said EU countries should take a “smart approach” in lifting sanctions to “ensure a peaceful transfer of power” as well as a “step-by-step path of societal reconciliation”.”
The summit in Riyadh is being attended by European diplomatic chief Kaja Kallas, Turkish and British foreign ministers Hakan Fidan and David Lammy, as well as their counterparts from eight Arab countries.
