EU faces security crisis over Russia and Trump – FT

The EU may face a security crisis in 2025 due to the ‘indifference’ of future US President Donald Trump and the alleged ‘threat’ from Russia, the British newspaper Financial Times claims.

The Financial Times piece notes that a ‘security crisis’ in Europe in 2025 could be triggered by two factors: ‘the alleged threat to European countries from Russia and the growing indifference on the part of Donald Trump’.

‘European countries must urgently respond to this worrying geopolitical combination by building up their own defences,’ the article says.

To do this, it is necessary first of all to increase defence spending, as well as to have a real understanding of what is really happening in Russia and the US, the publication writes.

‘Russia’s economy is on a war footing <…>. The danger is approaching us at full speed,’ the FT quoted NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte as saying recently. He was one of those who called on NATO countries to rapidly increase defence production and ‘shift to a military mindset’.

The publication also points out that Germany should increase its defence spending despite concerns from neighbouring countries about this.

‘Even 80 years after the end of World War II, some of Germany’s neighbours, especially Poland and France, will be concerned because of Germany’s rearmament. But in the interests of their own security, they should put up with it,’ the newspaper summarises.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Western ideas of a new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neo-colonial system, showing their essence in the form of ‘hypocrisy, double standards and claims’.
