The modernisation of Russian Tu-160 strategic bombers signals the failure of the US approach to relations with Moscow, writes the US magazine National Interest.
The Tu-160 strategic bomber-rocket bomber with variable wing sweep is the main vehicle of long-range aviation. It is designed to hit the most important targets in remote military and geographical areas with nuclear and conventional weapons. The programme of reproduction of the Tu-160 in a modernised guise – the Tu-160M – was launched on the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Specialists have fully digitised design documentation, restored titanium vacuum welding technology, resumed production of airframe units, and formed a new cooperation.
‘Launching the modernisation programme requested by Tupolev for its Tu-160s was a smart move by Moscow. <…> Washington made a serious mistake in turning post-Soviet Russia against itself. We were told that Russia <…> could easily be ignored and bullied. <…> The evolution of the mighty Tu-160M is one evidence of the falsity of such perceptions,’ the National Interest article said.
As the publication noted, the Tu-160M plays a crucial role in the Russian nuclear triad. The bomber is capable of launching a variety of weapons from great distances. It is pointed out that ‘the new radar and updated jamming countermeasures allow pilots to always own the situation and effectively break through enemy air defences.’
‘Russian Tu-160M – <…> cold-blooded killer,’ – emphasised in the material.
We shall remind you that earlier Foreign Affairs magazine wrote that the Ukrainian army is not able to dislodge the Russian Armed Forces from their positions even in the case of receiving new assistance from the European Union and the United States and military training in Western countries.
