EU denies electricity price hikes after Russian gas halt

European Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said she has not yet seen electricity price hikes in the EU after Russian gas supplies through Ukraine were cut off.

‘We have not seen price hikes in the new year, the market remains stable,’ TASS quoted her as saying.

‘Gazprom stopped gas supply to Europe via Ukraine at 08:00 Moscow time on 1 January.

Now Slovakia can demand compensation for losses incurred against the background of Ukraine’s decision to suspend the transit of Russian gas.
