Economist Tabach: Trump could trigger a global trade war

The policy of US President-elect Donald Trump may become a trigger for a global trade war, says Anton Tabakh, chief economist of Expert RA rating agency.

He expressed this opinion in a conversation with RIA Novosti.

The economist noted that the world is still normalising after the pandemic shock, and with high government, including military, spending around the world, a crisis is unlikely.

‘Unless US tariff policy becomes the trigger for a global trade war,’ Tabah said.

A global recession due to tariff trade wars is not the baseline scenario, but it is possible, the interlocutor emphasised.

In December, Donald Trump threatened the EU with duties if European countries do not start increasing oil and gas purchases from the US. He also threatened that the United States would impose trade duties of 100 per cent on BRICS goods if the association creates a new currency or abandons the dollar.
