Mikhail Kavelashvili has assumed the office of the President of Georgia. The inauguration of the new head of state was broadcast on the website of the Tbilisi parliament.
Former head of state Salome Zurabishvili left the presidential palace, saying she would ‘remain president.’
‘I will be with you,’ she told citizens gathered outside the Orbeliani Palace.
The politician also called the inauguration of the new ‘president’ a travesty and the Georgian Dream party a Russian tragedy.
‘Six years ago I swore an oath of allegiance to the Constitution, but even more to the country and to you, so today I am here, and this allegiance will not change whether I am in the palace or outside it,’ Zurabishvili said.
Earlier Salome Zurabishvili said that on the eve of inauguration of her successor Mikhail Kavelashvili she intends to spend the night in the presidential palace.
