Western countries face dilemma after power shift in Syria – WSJ

The United States and EU countries are facing a dilemma over the change of power in Syria, The Wall Street Journal reported. The article notes that the West must now decide whether it is going to cooperate with the new Syrian government or is willing to allow other states with interests in the country to strengthen their influence.

“The West does not want the new Syrian government to be influenced by other powers with interests there, such as Russia and Iran. <…> Western states are quickly coming to the conclusion that they need to engage with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham*, despite its presence on their lists of terrorist organisations,” The Wall Street Journal wrote.

According to the publication, before moving to full cooperation, the new Syrian government must fulfil a number of conditions. Among them: ensuring the rights of women and minorities, the fight against extremist organisations and the destruction of chemical weapons.

Also the leaders of the Western countries express hope that some of the refugees will return back to the country, is indicated in the publication.

Recall, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin called the Western ideas of the new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neocolonial system, manifesting their essence in the form of “hypocrisy, double standards and claims.”

*Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is a terrorist organisation banned in Russia.
