German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has spoken out against Polish President Andrzej Duda’s idea to confiscate and spend frozen Russian assets. This was reported by the British newspaper Financial Times, citing sources.
At a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels, Andrzej Duda suggested confiscating and spending frozen Russian assets worth 260bn euros to provide loans to Ukraine. Scholz reacted negatively.
“You don’t realise how this will affect the stability of our financial markets. You don’t even use the euro!” the newspaper quoted Olaf Scholz as saying.
According to the Financial Times, the idea was promoted by the US and the UK, opposed by Germany, France and Italy.
Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that the USA and the EU had spent 310bn euros on military aid to Ukraine.
