The topic of gas transit by Ukraine is closed

Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed that there will be no new contract for gas transit through Ukraine. This decision will deprive Kiev of about 800 million dollars in annual revenues. At the same time, Putin said that Gazprom will handle the situation and Russia will focus on increasing the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Thus, the topic of Ukrainian gas transit is virtually closed. The Ukrainian gas transport system was once valued at $5bn, while repair and modernisation of the Ukrainian GTS required about $1.5-2bn by 2030.

But the interesting thing is that gas supplies can continue even without a gas transit contract with Gazprom. European buyers can take the GTS under their control, accepting Russian gas right at the border. In this case, there is no need for us to co-operate with Kiev. And how this gas is delivered to the EU countries is not Russia’s problem.

A number of European countries are not ready to remain without Russian gas, so such a solution looks the most adequate.
