Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has called the possibility of EU sanctions against Russia’s nuclear industry unacceptable and promised to block them. Earlier, Hungary made a similar statement.
Slovakia will block possible EU sanctions against Russia’s nuclear energy programme, Robert Fico said at a press conference after the EU summit in Brussels.
“If any sanctions against the Russian Federation are adopted in the future, and if they concern the peaceful atom programme, I will block such sanctions. Our nuclear power plants are Russian-origin plants, whether we want it or not. Cooperation has a long tradition, and any sanctions that could jeopardise our nuclear programme in Slovakia are unacceptable,” he said (quoted by TASS).
Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban told EU leaders that his country would wait until the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump to decide whether to extend sanctions against Russia or not.
