Republicans who favoured aid to Kiev have changed their position – NYT

Some Republicans in the US Congress, who were actively in favour of aid to Ukraine earlier, have changed their position after Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election, The New York Times reported.

“In the weeks since Trump won the election, some of the most ardent Republican supporters of funding the war in Ukraine have markedly changed their tone to match his (position – ed.). They said it was in the interests of Kiev and Washington to end the war, not to keep writing cheques that could prolong it,” The New York Times said.

The newspaper called the changes significant and pointed out that Republican Party officials are now showing “less and less enthusiasm” for funding arms supplies to Kiev.

Congressman Todd Young, previously in favour of providing assistance to Ukraine, said that he sees the point in allowing the future US President Donald Trump to negotiate a “positive solution”.

We shall remind you that earlier Foreign Affairs magazine wrote that the Ukrainian army was not capable of dislodging the Russian Armed Forces from its positions even if it receives new aid from the EU and the USA and trains the military in Western countries.
