Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad complained to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi shortly before he was toppled about Turkey’s active support for the armed opposition to change power in the Arab republic.
According to Reuters, citing sources, Araqchi assured an angry Assad that Tehran would continue to assist him.
The Iranian minister also promised to raise the issue in dialogue with Turkey. Araqchi met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan the following day.
‘The meeting was tense. Iran expressed its dissatisfaction with Turkey’s support for US and Israeli plans and conveyed Assad’s concerns,’ the publication said.
Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the US is playing the role of a ‘geopolitical puppeteer’ in the events in Syria.
